Several years ago, I was sitting in a guided meditation and my Master said the word “balance”. I immediately felt everything in my body, even the subtlety of my energy, come to a complete stop. And I thought, is this what it feels like to be balanced? I don’t feel like I can move my body right now. I can’t even think to get myself out of this loop of thoughts. Wow. I thought reaching a point of complete balance would make me feel accomplished or at peace. But I really felt stuck more than anything.
This experience led me quickly to find another state of being. As I visualized and explored what “balance” truly meant, I could see scales that tipped from one side to the other until the weight had settled into a state of balance. And watched what happened as these scales just sat there. Just as still as could be until something came along to create change or movement by adding or taking away. Then I saw a ball rolling across the street until it came to a stop, waiting for some other force to influence it into a new direction. Perhaps the wind, or a swift kick, or someone picking it up to get it out of the way.
I really didn’t want to have this kind of experience where I reach this “ultimate” goal of balance to only find myself sitting and waiting for the next wind or swift kick to get me going again. It didn’t feel proactive to me. It felt like being a victim. With determination, I questioned, “Do I really want to sit here and wait for some outside influence to be my motivator?”
Then I heard the word “harmony”. And the choir began to sing. That was it! That was the practice of conscious, co-creating energy my heart and soul were looking for. I wanted to be a part of the choir. A part of the bigger picture, where we all bring our gift to the table in a way that supports and enhances one another. When the choir harmonizes so beautifully, then real music can be created. We can go anywhere. Do anything! The possibilities are endless.
So while “balance” is a word that is quite synonymous with Feng Shui, and I may even use it now and then, I do inspire my clients and students to seek a life that is in harmony. Your life must be in harmony with your Self, with others and with the universe. Like the strings of a guitar… when one is struck, the others are awakened to be heard. Keep the momentum going and allow opportunities for your choir to sing!
