Does Feng Shui Work?

As a child, I sought control and stability in a chaotic world, an unstable home and family. Life was uncertain on a daily basis—and as a sensitive child, I innately knew or sought to make my personal space…a safe place.

Having my room picked up, stuffed friends in their place—even having them on a nightly rotation of who slept next to me—provided comfort and inner peace. Knowing that this is a space I could retreat to daily to cry, pray, and communicate with a more powerful and wiser presence than myself, I believe was my saving grace.

As an adult, my space, my office, home, and even personal space “bubble” are sacred spaces. I am extremely conscientious of who and what energies I allow into these places.

How Does Feng Shui Work?

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice that seeks to harmonize individuals with their environment by arranging furniture and other objects in a specific way. The underlying principle of feng shui is that everything in the world is interconnected and that by arranging one’s environment in a certain way, one can achieve balance and harmony.

When Feng Shui came into my awareness, almost 20 years ago, it felt like a natural fit. Like I already got it. I knew the power of creating an outer world that can support or shift my inner world. It was more than decor and color selection; it was about creating an environment that reflected back to me what was important. And through various phases of my life, those things shifted. As a child I created safe unconditional connections with stuffed animals and dolls; as a teen it was about self-expression; and as a young adult I sought security from an abusive partner, and then grew determined to create a place of groundedness, peace, and loving support for my own family.

I have a Yang Earth Dog in my 4 Pillar Chinese Astrology chart. This creature is grounded, nurturing, protective of home and family, and is a servant to humanity. I also have a Yang Water Dragon in my chart. Dragon is connected to the Spirit world; preferring to live outside of the confines of the human world. This intuition, and willingness to explore, can enhance the purpose of a sometimes mundane earthly experience.

These and the other two animals and 5 five elements in my chart, as well as my life experiences, are why I do what I do. Feng Shui is not just a hobby for me. For 27 years, my graphic design career and the creative projects I worked on were blanketed by the mutli-dimensional concepts of this ancient Chinese philosophy and practice. Feng Shui guides most, if not all, of the choices I make.
